- Mapping vs. random cleaning. Models with lidar or camera mapping clean in neat rows, remember your rooms and let you block off areas in the app. Budget models bump around randomly, which is fine for one open room.
- Self-emptying base. A self-emptying dock empties the robot into a bag for weeks at a time. It costs more, but it is the feature most owners say they would not give up.
- Pets and carpets. If you have pets, look for rubber brush rolls (less hair tangling) and strong suction. Thick carpet needs more power than hard floors.
- Height and obstacles. Check the robot's height if you want it under beds and couches. Obstacle avoidance helps a lot in homes with cords, socks or pet accidents on the floor.
