- Match it to the room. Small humidifiers suit a nightstand or office. For a bedroom or living room, look for one rated for that room size, and for a bigger tank so it runs all night without a refill.
- Cool mist or warm mist. Cool mist models use less power and are the usual pick for kids' rooms because nothing gets hot. Warm mist models boil the water first and can feel cozier in a cold room. Some do both.
- Easy to fill and clean. Top-fill tanks with a wide opening are much easier to refill and wipe out. A humidifier should be rinsed and dried often, so skip any model that looks hard to get into.
- Humidity control. A built-in humidity sensor (often called a humidistat) turns the mist up or down to hold the level you set, so the room does not get damp.

Health agencies like the EPA suggest keeping indoor humidity roughly between 30 and 50 percent. Too high can lead to condensation on windows and mold.
Can I put essential oils in a humidifier?
